Which woman inspires you?

I would rather say what inspires me in women ; and the answer is vast and exciting. I admire the capacity of resilience which can lead a woman to endure physical and moral sufferings for years before finding freedom. We can assimilate that reaction to weakness or naivety, when in reality it is survival mechanism. Our generation of women is becoming more and more empowered, and we are ready to defend our rightful place against men : this fight involves access to education, to professional development in a position we choose, the discovery of existing opportunities beyond our social circle if it is closed, and the full enjoyment of our fundamental freedoms ; in particular, the respect of private life and free disposal of the body with dignity, and freedom of expression. Many women are still slaves either by physical constraint or by psychological control, and sooner or later this will end, as any injustice. Courageous and inspiring women have worked for that change ; I am thinking in particular at Olympe de Gouges, Mariama Bâ, Benoîte Groult, or Nina Simone. Others in their field have taken up the torch : I’m thinking of writers such as Fatou Diome, Chimamanda Adichie or Christiane Taubira. We will contitnue the fight for total emancipation, and to do so we must be inspired by ouselves, learn and act every day on our scale or beyond.

Which invention would change your life?
If there was a time machine, that would suit a lot of people. A day is no longuer enough to rest or to do our entire program : so if a day could last 48 hours instead of 24, we would take more time to live, and to get old more serenely.

Next book you’ll read?
After Aimé Césaire and Katoucha Niane, the next author I will read will be Emile Zola; I want to know more about « L’affaire Dreyfus », that human and legal tragedy which reminds us that the representatives of the people can become the worst incarnation of the people, and that we must always be vigilant to respect the principles of democracy.

The most important thing one can teach a daughter?

This question is meaningful because it symbolizes the vulnerable place occupied by girls in our society. With regard to the historical classification that women undergo (baby machines, legally incompetent, slaves, the weak party etc…), the first persons to whom we must adress here are men ! Men should be taught the most important human principle there is : respect women, and protect them as much as they protect you. Once this truth restored, it is then easy to teach a girl to love herself, to respect herself and not to be afraid to carry out her ambitions.Today, a mother or a father is still teaching her daughter to protect herself, to be careful with men and to know how to defend herself ; it’s very sad to see that the change of mentalities is too slow, but still, all injustice meets decline, sooner or later.

How do you see your future?
I see my future evolving according to the progress of my generation. I don’t know this future, but by continuing to value myself as a woman, to take my rightful place as a human and by respecting others, I have no doubts about becoming who I want to be.

A bientôt

So many women, really. A ‘type of woman’ that inspires me... A woman who helps other women rise.I’m so amazed by so many women that I encounter, and I’ve surrounded myself with. What a gift, women... to be a woman.
